If a global designer staple has emerged in the 21st century, it is Comme des Garçons PLAY. Launched in 2002, The line from Rei Kawakubo's avant-garde label has come to set a high standard for minimalist wardrobe basics. Each season, the endearing heart logo created by New York designer Filip Pagowski appears in fresh configurations on the label's line of t-shirts short and long-sleeved; cardigans; hoodies; and collared shirts. Whatever form it takes, the anthropomorphized heart emblem always speaks to the evocative power of the simplest iconography and branding.
The heart emblem has often appeared in pairs, each commenting on the iconicity of the logo itself through a simple dynamism. The Comme des Garçons PLAY Double Red Emblem Men's Sweater features two red heart emblems appliquéd to the chest: one smaller heart emblem laid over another larger one, thereby creating a larger heart with four eyes. The question, though, is are they becoming one, or is one splitting into two?
